Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10

I install the new release of Ubuntu on my Linux box and have been running it for just over three days now. I have not really been using it a whole lot but have been fairly pleased with the release so far. I have notice some performance increase especially in running Cedega.

The updated GUI is a pleasant and is more on par with Fedora Core 5 (haven’t tried the new release version 6 yet). There are loads of bundled program updates with it such as Azureus, which does not crash and is running a lot smoother than previously and 0.11.1 Banshee has minor improvements to it’s interface and performance most noticeably the tray icon. I am having problems with the Scrobbler plugin which reports the songs played by Banshee.

Firefox 2 was bundled with it too. The new version is great although some things are lacking still like plugin compatibility and it now has a built in session saver but in order to activate the feature you must go about:config which is not a very user friendly way of configuring the browser. A built in spell checker is great! All the words I type now has the familiar red squiggly line.

I had some problems with backing up my settings from Dapper Drake so I lost quite a lot of settings when I moved to the new version of Linux. A minor grudge I had with the new install was the two virtual desktops that was setup by default. Normally it is setup with four which is a nice number for me. It took couple of seconds to rectify that but still a small nuisance. Also Gnome panel crashed within the second day of using it. I was going about my daily routine when I could no click on any of the Gnome panels. A kick “killall gnome-panel” fixed the problem.

Also Ubuntu is still shipping Cd’s for 6.06. There should be an option to choose either for free.
