Ubuntu 7.10

I have finally installed the new release of Ubuntu “Gutsy Gibbon” on my linux box and it ran fine till I tried to get WPA working. THe support for WPA is very dodgy. Using network manager to configure the WPA it crashed and locked up the whole system. After a reboot it got stuck trying to start CUPSD. I had to restore the interface file from the install CD to get it back up. This means leaving WPA off still.

The desktop effects and restricted drivers were fairly easy to setup although during the install through the live CD I had not configure the networking so it had a problem verifying some of the repositories so it commented them out. This also left out or had problem verifying the nvidia driver repository. This may have been caused by a DNS problem steaming from the router but after a quick source.list generator provided on Ubuntu website made it all happy again.

I fairly happy with this release. Although it lacks the amount of back ported software in the repositories it seems to have most of the applications I need on a daily basis (Thunderbird, Eclipse, etc). The desktop effects lacks customizability compared to the compiz and beryl. It only has three levels of effects ranging from no effects to extra effects.

There are a lot more themes bundled into this release which is nice to see but does not have the usual amount of wallpapers. These are small petty complaints.

The printing worked flawlessly using the test page to the server downstairs.
