I am currently facing some networking issues which currently looks like a router having a problem with the “Rate Adaptive” technology that BT is using for their ADSL lines. It is used to monitor network status and restrict the rate to what the line is capable of at the time. This type of service was only used on the new BT line when I switched from a fixed 512k to the maximum of 8mb. It keeps disconnecting even thought the router ADSL light is still lit.
A call to BT to find out what ADSL standard they are using to make sure the next router I buy (my third one now) is compatible, I find out a technical engineer there uses Google to answer my question. I was only passed to this “experienced” engineer after three transfers too. The engineer was unable to answer my question as well as unable to tell me which exchange I was on because BT had changed their (public) website.
This only seems to happen when I have my computer switched on when I am down in Eastbourne and doesn’t seem to affect Tommy when he brings his notebook down with him from Canterbury. The server is constant running and get intermittent responses from the outside world but I believe this is an issue with the server rather than the Internet itself.
Although this seems like an odd problem I trust Gile’s judgement and will have to look for a new router that will hopefully cope with the new “Rate Adaptive” technology.
What I was think is it might be a line issue. I have one more troubleshooting to try, which is to isolate the incoming line from everything else and see if it works.
I apologise for any inconveniences as frustrating it is for you to get onto my site, it’s even more frustrating to access all the things I need too.
I have ordered a new router. I will hopefully be able to get it this weekend and get it set up and running before I leave.
