Dorgem Open Source Montion Capture Software

I found this light weight and free software called Dorgem. It’s not very easy to set up because of the GUI but with instructions on SimpleHelp.net on the article “How to use your PC and Webcam as a motion-detecting and recording security camera” it was very easy to see how the software worked. It allows multiple camera set up as well as multiple places to store you images and manipulate them with captions.

It does have a problem if you lock your computer the coftware loses it’s access to the web cam and does not do the motion detection. This is a major bad point about the software.

What cameras have you tried with Dorgem?
I bought a no-name webcam off Amazon for like $8 recently and am just amazed at how easy that thing was to set up with Dorgem and the motion detect feature.
I’m having all kinds of fun with it, but I’d really like to hook Dorgem up to a camera that took better still photos.
Problem is that I’m having a heck of a time knowing what cameras will work with it.
I imagine any camera you plug into a WinXP box that shows up as a “Digitcal Camera” under My Computer would work with Dorgem. Maybe this has something to do some “Video for Windows” specification/standard?

Anyway, if you’ve got any regular digital cameras you know to work with Dorgem (some 5 year old 3 MP camera would be perfect!) please let me know!

I can definately say the newish Canon SX10 IS “megazoom” camera doesn’t work with Dorgem, though it has a brand new port of CHDK (for firmware version 1.0A only so far).
I’ve played w/ some CHDK motion detect scripts but have had no luck – once it detects motion, it keeps detecting motion forver and just shoots constantly. I’ll figure it out, but my SX10 IS likes very high voltage batteries and starts complaining about fully charged Energize 2500 milliamp batteries after something like 20 minutes. I’ve got to get that problem fixed too…

I was using my Logitech Orb (pre Carl Zeiss lense) web cam but have not tried it with any others.

This is how I understand how Dorgem works too. Good luck with getting your camera to work but I think Dorgem development is dead.

i am trying with my logitech with carl zeiss lens as well – not sure if i would be able to get my dorgem work – is there a better and similar program that i could use for my survelance of my car in parking lot (it got recently vandalized)
presently i am trying to get dorgem installed but it is not showing my camera as detected under logitech name – it just shows ‘Miocrosoft WDM image capture’ —how do i get to show my camera in it?

      Hi Ravi,

I only used Dorgem for a brief moment but mine showed up in the list with no problems so I’m not sure why yours does not.

I have tried Zoneminder but I couldn’t get that to work.

My last attempt which also failed was to use VLC command line to capture the webcam stream say every 10 seconds as an image and save it to a web directory. Alas I couldn’t get VLC command line to record. Once I had got that working I would have written a very simple bash script to capture and save every 10 seconds and maybe put a web front end onto it for configuring and control.

If you find a solution please do let me know.

      Thanks

      – Danny
