Taking the Agile manifesto and using in day to day work life is a common place at work (I hope). I thought I could try and apply them to my personal life too and started daily stand ups with my partner.
We live a hectic life as it is with 2 children and both of us as working parents so communication and organisation is key.
The house of Tsang, a typical day would look something like this:
We have a slack group which we have but admittedly don’t use. WhatsApp has been the preferred method of instant messaging. As a way of making sure we communicate even if we are not around we have turned to using Standup Alice which creates a slack bot.
Every night, we have Standup Alice set to ask us our day two hours before the “standup” time with reminders in between. The questions we have set are basic but also enough to capture what are most important for each other. The idea being it can be as brief or as detailed as you’d like. The only non optional question is “What is happening tomorrow?” so even if you don’t want to talk about your day, you can add what is happening the next day.
From a relationship point of view it does not replace person to person interactions (in my opinion) however if the tools and techniques work at work, I believe it can be applied in our personal lives to help make our lives easier.
A side benefit is it can become a diary so you can go back (slack history limit pending) of what happened at the time.
