Every so often I go back to Linux. In 1999 I discovered Linux for the first time and used SuSE. Then some time around 2002 it was Fedora Core and again in 2006 with Ubuntu. Now after installing the new power supply unit, I have set up and used Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.
The amount of work that has gone into what is now Compiz Fusion is amazing. In 2006 Compiz took a lot of effort to get it to work on Gnome. IT was easier made easier with an nVidia card but not it is so easy you don’t need a guide. The technology has come a long way since early 2007 when I last tried it. Things are a lot more stable with even features have been added. It’s amazing. The only thing you need to made “advanced” setting changes is to get the “Advance Desktop Effects Settings” by doing an apt-get in ubuntu:
apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
The new menu item appears in System > Preferences > Advance Desktop Effects Settings
You can now add individual effects to different windowing events like close, minimize, open, etc.
I won’t post any screenshots of the effects because I’m sure you can find videos and pictures else where. All I can say is it’s really cool, some practicle and others are just for showing off.
